Nigeria is found in west Africa. Nigeria is bounded in the west by benin Republic,in the north by Niger Republic,in the east by Cameroun Republic,in the north -east by Chad Republic and in the south by Atlantic ocean.
Location Of Nigeria
Nigeria is located between 4 degrees north and 14 degrees north of the equator and between 3 degrees east and 15 degrees east of the greenwich meridian.Therefore the latitudinal extent or stretch of Nigeria is about 10 degrees(14 degrees north to 4 degrees north) while longitudinal extent or stretch is 12 degrees(15 degrees east to 3 degrees east).
Size Of Nigeria
Well coming to the size,Nigeria is known as the fourth largest country in West Africa in terms of land area after Niger,Mali and Mauritania. The total land area of Nigeria is approximately 923,768 square kilometers.
Then the distance from the eastern part of Nigeria to western part of Nigeria is approximately 13000km while from the northern part of Nigeria to southern part of Nigeria is about 1100km.
Also in terms of population,Nigeria is the most populous single country in the African continent and the seventh most populous country in the world with 140 million people with actual figure of 140,003,542 people according to the last result gotten from the last census conducted in the country in 2006 by National population commission (NPC). In Nigeria,census is being conducted once in every 10 years.
And the country is known as the Giant of Africa.
How Nigeria Came Into Existence
The country Nigeria came into existence in the year 1914 as a result of amalgamation that is bringing together the northern and the southern protectorates. Nigeria became independent in the year 1960. As at that independence,the country had only three regions which are:
- The North
- The East
- The West
In the northern region,the ethnic group that dominates this region is called the Hausa and also the religion that dominates is muslim.They have its headquaters in Kaduna.
In the eastern region,the ethnic group that dominates this region is called the Igbo,the religion practiced in this region is christianity and they had its headquaters in Enugu.
In the western region,the ethnic group that dominates this region is called the Yoruba,the religion practiced in this region is christianity and they have its headquaters in Ibadan.
Nigeria became a republic in 1960and also the fourth region known as the mid-west was created from the then western region with its headquaters in Benin city. The political divisions remained four until 1967 when the country was further divided into 12 states. It was in this period that the country entered into a civil war which most people call Biafran War. The war lasted for 3 years that is from 1967 to 1970. What led to the civil war? leadership crisis and tribal centiments. Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu known as the a General in Biafrian army who was among the first people that entered the Nigerian army as at that time with a university degree and also attended Nigeria Defence Academy.
He refused to take orders from LT Col. Gowon because he is higher in the military ranking than LT Col Gowon as a Col. and also the government was not doing the right thing. So he called for the Republic of Biafra. There have been several peaceful protest all over the old eastern region which is the present south-south and south-east in the country and also in different parts of Europe,America,Asia etc. Till the date of this article publication calling for the actualisation of the Republic of BIAFRA.
In 1976,the country was further divided into 19 states. Then in september 23rd 1987, two more states were created making it a total of 21 states.
Nigeria presently has 36 states and a federal capital territory(FCT),Abuja.
